About

A label built around a room.

Guava Records was founded in 2016 by the producer Darren Hoffman. It has always done one thing: put a band in a room that sounds right, record the performance live, and release it as it happened.

The session series is the label's spine. An artist arrives with their band, the room is already miked and lit, and the afternoon is recorded to multitrack and filmed on several cameras at once. The audio becomes an EP on the streaming services; the film goes to YouTube; and with Myxstem, the studio's sister company, some sessions become interactive apps in which the listener chooses the camera and mixes the band.

Sixteen releases carry the series name, from The Masakowski Family in 2018 to Rose Stoller in 2023, with Miette Hope, Linda Diaz, Nelini Stamp, ByMaddz, Laura Fisher, Millie Gibson and Julia Zivic among them. Aggie Miller's 2024 session was released as an app first.

Brooklyn, 2016 – 2018

The first room was on North Henry Street in Greenpoint: a live room with a drum kit, a wall of amplifiers and enough space for a band to face each other. The early films were shot here, and the first Live at Guava release, The Masakowski Family, came out in May 2018.

Hudson Valley, 2018 – 2026

In 2018 the label moved ninety minutes north to a cabin in the woods at Holmes, New York, backed by protected forest and a lake. The room was built around a restored 1926 Steinway Model L, with a pre-wired drum booth, a Universal Audio rig and vintage Fender and Mesa amplifiers. Most of the catalogue was made here, and for a period the cabin doubled as an artist residency.

Milan, 2026 –

In 2026 the studio's founder moved to Milan and Guava Records became part of Autoriale, the creative studio he runs there. Guava Records, LLC, its catalogue and its distribution are unchanged; Autoriale operates the label and produces its next sessions. New recordings will be announced on this site and on Instagram.
